Ensemble Ialoni is a women’s vocal ensemble founded in 2009 in Tbilisi, Georgia, under the direction of musicologist Nino Naneishvili. Their mission is to research, revive and popularize traditional Georgian polyphony, encompassing sacred ecclesiastical chant, regional folk songs and urban “city” music. From the start, they’ve drawn upon archival manuscripts, field recordings and expedition findings to unearth rare and complex repertoire—often pioneering performances by women of pieces historically reserved for male choirs.
