Kâni Karaca

Kâni Karaca (1930-2004) was a Turkish singer.

Born in Adana, Turkey, Karaca lost his eyesight at the age of two; this prompted him to memorise the Quran in elementary school. He moved to Istanbul in 1950, and worked with Sadettin Kaynak, a major composer and performer of Turkish music at the time. He also worked with Sadettin Heper, from whom he learnt religious and nonreligious music.

During the late 1950s and the 1960s, Karaca sang many famous classical Turkish fasıl tunes on Istanbul Radio. He sang at numerous concerts and religious services in Turkey and internationally. He also developed an extensive recording career.

Aside from his memory (he could retain a song with as few as a couple of repetitions), Karaca had absolute pitch. He died from cancer at the age of seventy-four.
