Northr
Northr is the dark ambient project of Joeri Woldberg.
The name Northr (or Norðr) comes from old Norse. It means going northwards.
That is exactly what happened.
Joeri was born in the Netherlands in 1972 and lived in Amsterdam most of his life, but moved to Trondheim, Norway in 2015, therefore going northwards, hence the name.
Northr has been making dark music for a longtime, but the project Northr really started to take shape in 2016, when he finally managed to move his whole studio to Norway and could start making serious music again.
After 2017, a hectic work life and personal issues made it hard to make much music, but the positive side of the pandemic resulted in more free time and 2 more albums that are now near finished, and more is to come.
Northr works mostly with samples, either field recordings or experimental recording of everyday objects, crafting his own sounds by manipulating the audio through samplers and effects, to make drones, pads or effects, but powerful software synths, especially those who can work with these samples like Omnisphere, are very much in use too.
How to describe Northr? Dark drones and soundscapes, organic and moving sounds.
A dystopian feel but with light at the end of the tunnel.
Melancholic, atmospheric and cinematic.
Darkness is enlightening!
Influences:
In the 90’s Joeri discovered bands like Raison d'être, Lustmord & Deutsch Nepal and the discography of the Cold Meat label, but was already listening to Dead can Dance and Gothic music since the 80’s. The darkness was already in his blood.
Later more bands would enter his influences like: Kammarheit, Beyond Sensory Experience, Svartsinn, Atrium Carceri, New Risen Throne, Thomas Köner, Desiderii Marginis and many more, but not just dark ambient, classical music, industrial, film music, black metal or anything strange and dark would be of interest and influence.
Discography:
Heritage was self released on digital platforms via his own label Subfield Records in 2017.
Preludes 1 & 2 contain 2 songs each, you could call them the prequels to what Northr would become. Released by Subfield in 2022, after the songs were recovered from an old hard drive and remastered.
